Thanks, Jan for the reminder to put things into perspective. I’ve never been to Zion but it looks spectacular. As poet David Ignatow reminds himself, “I should be content to look at a mountain for what it is and not commend on my life.”
The ocean captivates me. I sit and watch it endlessly. It seems to smooth life’s rougher edges.

Thanks so much!
It’s interesting to see that that phrase, “the first of many lasts” expressed what the final year was like for you of having your daughter at home.
I’ll definitely keep an eye on your blog, and your journey ahead. Your writing and reflections are wonderful and thought-provoking.
I’m going to write a post soon about “The first of many firsts,” and picking up other life dreams again, as parenting in the every day way is coming soon to a close.
Our kids will need us in different ways in the years ahead, like our relationships with our parents changed when it was our turn to push away from the shore of home.
One journey ends – or almost, for us – and new ones begin.
There are many more great adventures to come for each, and all!

Ooohhh, love this! Thank you for pointing me to your “Fresh Eyes,” Jan. It’s so nice to connect with another kindred spirit. Your “first of many lasts” describes my journey last year to a T.
As the mother of an only who just began her first year of college, I am comforted by these quotes about beginnings, especially the one by Edward Said and Louis L’Amour. Just the medicine I need to help ease the ache of withdrawal which seems to come when I least expect it.
