See a moment. Take a moment. Give a moment.

The unbelievable blue of deeply beautiful Crater Lake National Park made me curious about others’ beautiful blue thoughts. Here are a few:
I stood in the blue darkness and looked in awe at the Earth from the lunar surface. What I saw was almost too beautiful to grasp.
Eugene Cernan
To see the earth as we now see it, small and blue and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the unending night – brothers who see now they are truly brothers.
Archibald MacLeish
Life has loveliness to sell, all beautiful and splendid things, blue waves whitened on a cliff, soaring fire that sways and sings, and children’s faces looking up, holding wonder like a cup.
Sara Teasdale
Give me the clear blue sky above my head, and the green turf beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and a three hours’ march to dinner – and then to thinking!
William Hazlitt
And finally, for fun:
Blue jeans are the most beautiful things since the gondola.

Our son, 16, was lamenting the soon-to-start school year.
“They should make a law that every month has to be 50 days long,” he said, inventing ways to stall the inevitable start of the always-tough junior year of high school.
“And then school wouldn’t start until August 45th,” he mused, filling in the detail of the dream.
I laughed.
“When I look back at the most perfect moment of the summer, I get sad that it’s gone,” he said, wistful yet smiling at the memory of that most perfect moment, now long gone.
My reaction was a swift, sudden burst of positive energy. I could notice, could appreciate his feelings, but could not, in this case, commiserate. He was missing the perfect moment…at that moment.
“I know, but you just have to make MORE moments…or see the ones that are there and quickly gone,” I said.
Perfect moments, gone, do not mean perfect moments won’t come again.
Perfect moments can happen weekly, even daily, and you may notice them or – if deep in thought, planning or worry – you may not. (My dad and I were talking the other day about what you miss when your “worry glasses” are on).
Matt smiled, and continued to pet Abby, one of our two beloved dogs.
“See, THIS moment – RIGHT NOW – is one of Abby’s most perfect moments,” I said.
He smiled. He saw.
How about you:
- When was your last perfect moment?
- Was it a moment that you expected?
- Did you do something to create it, such as to plan an event, or work toward a long-pursued goal?
- Or was it a moment that surprised you? (Sometimes perfect moments occur in the simplest circumstances).
Sometimes just paying attention – noticing them – is all that it takes to realize there are more perfect moments than you thought.
On the eve of the 2008 Summer Olympics, here are a few random thoughts on big visions and great achievements:
Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
William Butler Yeats
The future belongs to people who see possibilities before they become obvious.
Ted Levitt
Small doubt, small enlightenment. Big doubt, big enlightenment.
Zen saying
The problem is never how to get new, innovative ideas into your mind, but how to get old ones out.
Dee Hock
You cannot lead if you do not believe.
C. K. Prahalad
There is no easy way from the earth to the stars.
Seneca
You’ve got to find the force inside you.
Joseph Campbell
I know it was wonderful, but I don’t know how I did it.
Laurence Olivier, after a brilliant performance of “Othello”
