Super Hero

I was going through a few quotes the other day, looking for a few ideas to add to some client training and feedback reports. I found one from a day last year when our son, now 16, and I were bantering about something or other.

“I still remember when you went through your Super Hero phase,” I said to Matt.

He quickly replied, “What makes you think it’s over?”

I laughed heartily then, and I laughed again when I recalled that thought. I love that spirit in Matt, in anyone – the sense that they might, today, be a Super Hero in some large or small way.

And for you? Is your Super Hero phase done?

I bet not. You might still have that cape lying around somewhere…

Like "Lucky Chili" from Not Your Mother’s Slow Cooker Cookbook.

How can you not?

A cruel part of Nature’s plan

An especially cruel part of Nature’s Grand Design is that just at the point when a young man, say one of 16 (our son), is amping up his eating, everyone around him (his sister, his parents) are shutting theirs down.

Matt, a cross country and track runner, is joyously eating ALL the time these days.

“You might as well buy a box of cereal a day, Mom, because I can finish one all by myself. EVERY day,” he recently said.

I laughed. And then I watched.

He’s right. I’d heard about this phase with competitive swimmers and other high-energy-consumption athletes.

It is ironic that Mother Nature has him piling it in and piling it on right at the point where the rest of us are always walking it off.

Our daughter, soon 24, was looking wistfully at her brother one day, eating anything he wanted, and said, “Enjoy it now because it doesn’t last!”

Anne, a competitive swimmer and cross country runner, herself, through high school remembers the days when everything she put in her mouth was instantly burned off by exercise or growth. Or both.

What was once so easy soon takes some toil (or you trick yourself into thinking “toil” is really “fun”).

Sometimes Nature can be oh so cruel.

Some mistakes don’t matter.

They still taste good.

What was the last mistake you made that, in the end, mattered not one whit, though it bothered you before it didn’t?

Uncertainty

Uncertainty is certainly having its way with the month of January this year…the economy, the weather, political fortunes…and more.

In that light, a few quotes seem right about now:

When we are not sure, we are alive.
Graham Greene

Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which, in prosperous circumstances, would have lain dormant.
Horace

Our greatest weariness comes from work not done.
Eric Hoffer

And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
Anais Nin

And finally, a light way to end this momentary pause from the day-to-day:

Dharma: (answering Greg’s cell phone) The cellular customer you have called has traveled outside the service area. Please hang up and return to a simpler way of life.
Dharma and Greg
